DaveB, for my tank stands, I usually build with 2x4, then skin it with the 1/4" birch or oak plywood (not the luan). Then I use 1x2, 1x3, and 1x4 boards to do the trim. I also use the pre-made corner trim for the rounded corner look, depending on how much work I want to do.
I used the same kind of hinges as maduro did as well. They attach perpendicular to the door when it is closed, and screw into the 2x4 supporting the front panel of plywood. The doors have to be at least 3/4" thick to be able to use those hinges, as they are recessed into the door itself.
I do not own a table saw, so I make all my cuts with a circular saw, using either a 4' level clamped to the wood, or a long 1x or 2x board (that I check for straightness) clamped to the wood to keep the cut straight.
