14gal Biocube Stocking (not socks)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hadn't planned on using a skimmer, for better or worse. I may have to but I'm planning on weekly 5-7 gallon changes in water. As I've been led to believe, that will cover what I need for cleanliness. The new questions that have come to the for are:

My place stays at about 70F, which is a bit cool for the tank, can I slide a heater in there anywhere?
I'm cycling the tank as we speak using the lfs's water. When do I start doing water changes, and do I need to do anything besides let it sit and run?
As I do not have a constant source of my own, what are some concerns I should have using the lfs's (prefiltered of course) saltwater?

That's all for now and thanks again. :)

you dont really need a skimmer for biocube. and i placed a heater in the left side of the filter system for my 29 biocube to hide it. you do water changes 10% once every 2-3 weeks or 20% per month depending on the amount of fish u have.

Would it be alright to have ur skimmer on a couple hours before u do a water change? I have the 14gal biocube. I spent a pretty nickel on this slick glass peice of plasic. And I cant return it.

Its best to do 10% weekly water changes. It doesn't take long at all, just a gallon and a half, once a month do a 20% water change, it does wonders.

You don't need a skimmer at all, there won't be enough waste for one.

And as far as lighting, most people add more lighting, or change it completely.

Most people buy the bio cubes and Aqua pods and such for the tank.. half that stuff that comes with it is junk and needs to be replaced, unless you're after really low maintenance corals.

Also, take all the bio balls out of the tank, they do more harm then good.

Yeah, I'm new to fish and I'm planning to start off with a 14 gallon biocube. I'm hopeing if it's not extreamly expensive to throw in a clown fish and some live rock, and maybe some "gobeys"-i think thats what they are called. But I really don't know much, so can someone maybe help me outwith fish, and prices?

I'd think that you'd probably be better served with an auto top off system than you would be with a skimmer. I'd also be careful what crabs you added some of them can cause you some real issues. I'd also imagine that you'd have some more members of your clean up crew like snails etc. Here is a cuc you wouldn't have many issues with after your tank is established http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=715

I have the tsunami auto topoff meter already. I did not plan of having any crabs in my tank, because they were eating everything. They were green and very small, happened along time ago. I plan on getting plenty astraea snails and couple sexy shrimps. I dont know if I want any fish. Im still doin research on what to get. Im also goin to have alot of soft corals.

Hi, hope you don't mind me butting in here. Only registered tonight and don't really know the protocol, but couldn't resist replying as we have the same problem - 3 weeks ago started up our 12 gallon Orca TL450 and the fan makes quite a racket when we put on the lights each day - it does quieten down but it is still slightly noisy. Have read of others having the same problem so I guess it is just part of the set up. I think (hope) we'll get used to it!
