thats probably only 2"

Then just make sure the datnoid is at least 2" tall. Since the widest the endlicheri can open its mouth is 2", then if the datnoid is 2" tall then endlicheri can't possibly eat the datnoid. Now that doesn't mean the endlicheri won't try, but at least you know the datnoid can't be eaten.

Did you know that bichirs are capable of doing deathrolls similar to a crocodile when they grab and hold on the prey. Dats are not really the fish that will move a lot to get away. They just freeze and pop out the spines. This just gives the endli the oppurtunity to do deathroll if it thinks it cant swallow it whole. Being tall wont make a difference if the endli decide to eat the small dat.

^Agree^
Yeah I'd say 7" minimum I had a 6" ABK get attacked by my 12" Senegal even though the ABK was WAY bigger than my Sens head also the reason I'm waiting to introduce my ~9" Afro

X2. My advise would be to grow out the dats separately.

If the deathroll comes into play, then doesn't that mean that even if the dat is 7-8" and the endlicheri can't swallow the dat, the endlicheri can still grab hold of the dat and do a deathroll? Ropefish are known for deathrolls, never really heard of endlicheris of doing deathrolls. Anyways isn't the deathroll performed when the polypterus is scavenging off a dead carcass instead of live prey?

A deathroll is perform when a bichir is not able to swallow the prey, dead or alive. I never had any bichir bother a 7" dat except for cichlids. So 6" dat is the safe time to mix them together as I always start with 6" dats when adding to my tank. Like other predator they size up the prey first before trying to eat it.

I won't mix them together as I have seen my 16inch endy take a few small 2-3inch 3bar indo tiger infront of me. Its best to separate them till they are big enough.

However even big fish also does not mean can mix as they might get killed by the bigger endies(group kill). Been there tried and now only keep bichirs in tanks only. :)
