15 sharks at Indianapolis Zoo die after maintenance error

everyone is human...people make mistakes...im sure everyone is feeling the loss employees and owners...very sad.

im sure next time they will have people there while there system is being restarted...to supervise the system make sure its all back in prisitine working condition...as im sure that was alot of money lost in this mistake.

Since I hate sharks so much, whenever I read anything about them dying, I'm always secretly happy. However, there's also a logical part inside me that tells me it's not right that they're being killed.

It sucks that their equipment malfunctioned, but this kind of thing is preventable if the zoo pays enough attention. They should probably be doing some thorough checks of their systems right about now...

Yes, sharks and rays are some of the easiest animals to kill using ozone. Air breathers are next on the list. Some fish can take the abuse a bit more before reacting. Snappers are fairly hardy in that department.


Even if you pay attention, once you realize you've made a mistake with ozone, it's too late. It kills THAT fast. Zoos/Aquariums all have multiple checks and back ups for things. This is just a freak accident, I'm sure. It wasn't like a failure during normal operation. It was a major shut down to repair that didn't get turned on correctly after the project.

If I find out more info on this accident, I'll be sure to pass along what I can.

When I was a little kid, my dad took us to an aquarium. They had a new hammerhead and no one believed it was there, so my dad lifted me over and was all "Tell daddy if you can see the shark." Of course, he didn't think about the fact that they swim like a million feet per second. It jumped up at my face. My dad pulled me back, but I was literally just a few inches from the shark's teeth. Whenever I see a shark, all I can think about is those teeth. Seriously.

It's bad. I went to the aquarium of the pacific with my ex-boyfriend. They have a little shark in the lobby. I didn't see it on the way in, but on the way out, I saw it and freaked out. I started crying and he had to carry me out lol. I'm ridiculous, I know.

I can't remember if it was a hammerhead or not. All I remember is that they were talking about the hammerhead and no one could see it so my dad lifted me. And then, BAM teeth! I was like 4. Probably one of the scariest things to ever happen to me. This was before they enclosed everything, too. Probably incidents like this that made them block things off. lol
