Well, following the untimely and currently unexplained death of my 8" Flower Horn I'm starting to think about what to do with the 150 Tall tank (48x24x31?)that I have. I'm thinking (with strong urging from the wife) of going to a CA/SA community tank.
Right now in the tank (and seemingly unaffected by whatever killed my FH) I have a 4.5" striped Raph, a 4" spotted Raph, and a 3" clown pleco.
I'm doing some research now and don't plan to add anything to the tank until after Christmas due to traveling and all the crazy stuff that always happens around the holidays. This will also give me some time to monitor the tank and water parameters which all appear to be fine.
So far I've this is the list I've come up with for additional fish:
5 Silver Dollars
8-10 BA Tetras
Firemouth
Severum (really like Red)
Urau
Salvini (not sure if this one will work)
HRP

I would like the cichlids to be males, and I know they might not all be possible in the tank. With the FH he was already 5" long when I got him, so I plan to get all of these fish small and grow them out. What are your thoughts?
I'd also thought of a Severum only tank, but know they show conspecific aggression. How many do you think would work in this tank?

It might work, but not sure if the sal will be too aggressive. It depends on the individual.

Yeah, the Sal was my primary concern.
Maybe the best way word this is to ask everyone for their stocking suggestions and amounts.
The following is what I'm interested in keeping starting with what I would like to have the most.
Red Severum (Tank Focal Point)
Other Severum (If possible)
Silver Dollars
Firemouths
Salvini
BA Tetras
HRP (or Con)
Larger variety of Cory (If there is one that is compatible)
True Parrot Cichlid (Not RBP)
Chocolate Cichlid

I'm interested to see what you guys come up with. Like I said, I'm in the early planning phases. The two raphs and the pleco seem to be doing fine in the tank (definitely more active now that the Monster FH is no longer with them :(), and I would want to stock it with the SD and BA first if I'm going to go with them so they can get acclimated before adding the cichlids (least aggressive to most aggressive). If people think the Salvini will work, he'd be the last one to enter the tank. Thanks.

Yeah, more peaceful than aggressive. Trying to make the most of the tank.

Firemouths can be aggressive. How about angels, sevs (as you mentioned), geos, discus, or vieja? (for cichlids, obviously you can do some nice tetras or another school as well)

I love discus, but have always been afraid of the care they need. Has that changed in recent years? I know back when I got into cichlids they were very needy fish that could often incur health problems at the drop of a hat (the price also kept me away from them).
Not really a fan of angels.
If I were to go with Discus, how many for the tank? Same if I went with Severums, how many? Thanks

For Discus, you need an acid ph of 6-6.5 and a temperature of 75-80ish. Most people say you should keep them in groups of 5-7 (odd numbers are better). You need to keep the water clean, but as long as you are doing water changes and have adequate filtration you should be good. What kind of severum would you want? (gold, red, green?) You could also make it planted which would improve water quality and look awesome (even if you want to do a low tech planted).

Firemouth can be aggressive...not usually too bad...I have had a few different sals male and female and all have been mean as hell.. maybe try some rainbows or rams..they are a little more on the peaceful side.

I've done planted before and i'm not really ready to go down that road again yet. Planted Discus is definately what I eventually want to have, but as i said before, I'm gonna wait on that one until i can do it right.

A red severum is what I'd want the most. Right now I'm leaning toward the Red Sev, a school of Silver Dollars, a school of BA Tetras, and maybe a school of Cory Cats (The severum shouldn't bother them right).
If I'm going with a Red Severum to be the focal fish maybe a couple of rams would be a good addition.
So much to think about...
