I'm in NJ and winter is getting close my 150 Tank is in the garage. Is insulating the whole tank going to keep the Temp at 80 degrees?

Well, you have to keep the heaters running, obviously, but yeah, you can wrap it all around with insulation and it'll keep it warm and toasty.

How much & What kind of Insulation do I need?

I have seen some people on here that buy the 3/4"-1" 2'x8' sheets of styrafoam you get at Lowes/Home Depot. The only way I have seen this used is if someone has their tank painted, and then siliconed and taped the styrafoam sheet to the tank. It will definitely cut back on your heating costs for the tank if applied properly.

Foam sheets are the ticket if your worried. Keep the lids on the tanks, seal in the heat the best you can on top, this keeps down evaporation too.

How many heaters are in there? With minimal insulation and 2 heaters (200W and 300W) I keep my garage 90 gallon at 75-77* in the winter, now 33* outside. The fish will understand the season change, as long as it doesn't dip too low(below 55*) you'll be fine.

Last year around February, I had a big water spill in my fish room so I ripped out the carpet and put down ceramic tile. I had to move my old 150 in the garage. I had 1000 watts of heaters in it and a kerosene heater running for the week it was all out there. My water temp stayed at 77-80. That is in Indiana and the outside temp was around 20-30.

I didn't use any insulation, but had all the heaters and it was only temporary. My fish handled the move fine (African peacocks and haps)

If you use the styrofoam boards, put tape (masking tape works fine) on all the edges to cover them. THEN tape the joints to eachother. Making a 5 sided insulated box to go over your tank will keep it warm for sure. Lift it off to feed, or build an opening portion to the top so that you can feed and do water changes with the insulation in place.
