how insulated is your garage? if you got a decent plumber just heat your garage FTW... baseboard. house value goes up with it...lol nice cool 65 degrees ftw....

Thanks for the input guy!!!! I insulated the top & bottom with styro and the inside of the table will also be insulted with styro. The tank back had been painted and all 4 side of the tank is covered an aluminum thermal blanket. This is water proof, non-toxic, no fiberglass and has strips of styro inside. I bought extra styro just in case.

So far it kept my tank at a steady 85 degree, with the front glass exposed.

Mabey you should try and put some insulation around your filter too. That will be circulating your nice warm water out there in the cold.

It might be a good idea to have a kerosene or propane heater ready in case the power goes out. Things could get cold pretty quick. Make sure you have adequate ventilation if you use it though!

Good luck...

How does that work? is it like a boiler setup?

No, it's much simpler. Either is a stand alone heater that uses fuel (kerosene or propane). Some heaters get pretty extravagant of course, but my simple propane heater works really well and has very little smell. Here is an example of what mine looks like:

It gives me something to do with the leftover propane after I put the grill up for winter :)

NICE! I like that idea. But do I need to have a vent system with this set up?

No, no necessarily. The heater would only be needed in case of a power outage or if it gets bitterly cold for a day or two and you want to warm the garage up a bit. You would need to crack a door or window to make sure the fumes don't get overwhelming...and you wouldn't want to run it too long unattended.

I had mine in a 12'X20' wooden shed I had set up as a small shop. I left the door cracked about 2" and I could work in there all day long in a t-shirt during the winter. One bottle would last several days.

You should be able to pick one up for around $30. If you have a tank at home, you're set. Pretty cheap insurance if the power goes out for a few hours!

Good luck to you man...

(by the way, excellent job on the insulation...looks good!)
