150 gal main floor?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ive had a 125 running PARALLEL to the joists and only resting on ONE joist in a 20 year old house for years and zero problems. My uncle is a structural engineer he said no problem I trust his judgement. I think people dont give enough credit to the strength of a house house.

here is an excellent article that is often posted in these types of threads.

I can't vouch for the info it contains as I am certainly not a structural engineer.

but I think it does help to clarify some common myths about aquarium weights and normal residential flooring.

it has worked for you so far and that is good, although I am surprised that your uncle said it would be no problem running parallel on only one joist, but he is the egineer and obviously knows what he is doing.

the problem is that your experience may not be typical. your house is obviously super well built, but others may not be.

in most houses doing that with a tank that heavy could spell trouble.

and that trouble could literally cost thousands of dollars in water damage repair.

150g gallons of water is no joke.

imagine standing in your living room and dumping a 5 gallon bucket of water.

quite a mess right?

now imagine doing this 29 more times...

just saying. I think its important to be cautious when dealing with tanks this volume and weight.

ok so ive done research and am still worried about my 125 gallon tank im about to setup...its going to be on the first floor of my 2 story house over the basement. it will be running along a wall parallel (yes scary) to the floor joists, even though it will cover 2 joists that appear to be reinforced already. plus kitty corner to that tank is my 45 tall that runs perpendicular to the joists.i know there are tons of factors involved in figuring if im good or not but I really cant get a straight answer, so im just hoping people can post what large tank they have (over 100 gallons) and where it is, preferably 2nd floor so i dont lose 10 years of my life worrying about this...hoping theres people out there with a 300 gallon tank on the third floor lol!.....

Lol sorry meant months that may not seem like much but my uncle said if anything were to go wrong it happens rather quickly..I think 150 is fine when you get over 200 gal then id worry
