150 Gal Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ill tell you what I run on my 125 g tank and my 120 g tank to help give you some ideas. On my 125 g I have an fx5 (love it and its not noisy at all), a cascade 1000 (good filter for the price), and 2 ac110s. On my 120 g tank I have a sump, a rena xp3 and a fluval 4 series.

I have a fx5 and 2 ac110's on my 140g. fx5 doesnt seem to pump what they say i almost think my ac110 pumps at least the same, and its freaking huge! i had to cut into my stand so i could fit it underneath. its very quiet though:) i have seen them sell for under 200 on ebay and i bought a ac110 for 63 new on ebay

Would a power filter be efficient enough for an aquarium that large? If it would help should I put two on it?

Yes you can adequately filter a 150 gal tank with Power Filters alone... For Cichlids you will want to use more than one for sure...

I was looking at putting 2 aquaclear 110s on it. They pump up tp 500 gph. Would this be ok?

I have a 6' 125 gal and currently the only filtration is two Aqua Clear 110s. I'm satisified with the result...

Power Filters have the benefits that they are inexpensive and they are very easy to maintain... on the downside when the water level in the tank drops (evaporation) they make a splashing noise.

Some people may suggest that Power Filters have less media volume. This is true with the cartridge style Power Filters (Emperor & Penguin for example) but is not true with the Aqua Clear.

The Cartridge style Power FIlters also have limitations on media options, but again this is not true with the Aqua Clears.

I will admit that Power Filters are not the best at "micron filtration" Having micron media under pressure allows it to last much longer than in the non pressurized Power Filter design. Micron Media can still be used, and it works just as well, it just needs to be changed more often.

I can pull the sponges out of my AC 110s, rinse them thoroughly and put them back in place in 5~7 minutes... It takes considerably longer to clean a canister...

Some people will claim that you can go much longer between cleanings with a canister. This is not true. A canister filter will slow in flow rate continually the more waste it collects. That means it will become less and less efficient as time goes on (between cleanings). Also waste collected in the filter will continue to rot and foul the water (increasing nitrate build up). Removing the waste from the filter can only be done through cleaning the filter and delayed cleanings result in higher waste concentrations.

As an asset canister filters can be set up to run silently even as water evaporates. They can also push water through components like UV lights or inline heaters. They also take up less room at the rim of the tank allowign the tank to be pushed closer to the wall. But for these benefits you will pay a higher price tag for the unit and more invovled maintenance to keep it running smoothly.
