150 gal stocking questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
why is it that some JD's and GT are darker and have more vivid colors and others are paler and less colorful ?
BUMP on the Lemon Os.. r they really as good looking in person ?

So I was pricing tanks yesterday, I don't have the room for a 6 foot tank the largest I can go is 5 feet these are the best options for me 150 gal 48x24x30 or 120 gal 60x18x20something. What tank is go ing to give me the optimal stocking situation ? Stuck because I like the length of the 120 but like the 2 ft width in the 150...customizing a tank is not an option

If those are your choices, I'd go with the 5' 120, if you can find one. It gives more square footage. Cichlids typically live in the bottom half of a tank, so a bigger footprint and less height would be optimal. Most people will probably tell you to go with the most gallons. I would check around and see if you can find (or have your LFS order) a 150 long. Its 60x24x24.

As far as the Oscars, my only experience is with tiger Oscars. But I'm sure they are the same fish, just different color variations. They grow fast, love to eat, are personable. They are messy eaters, though, so they require substrate vacuuming as needed, more often than other cichlids.
.

As far as some JDs and GTs having darker, more vivid colors, that has to do with hormones and emotions. Cichlids displaying a "washed out" look are typically stressed and submissive on the "pecking order". They should display normal colors in your tank, as long as it is not overstocked and the water is properly maintained. But, when choosing a fish at the LFS, I try to pick out the ones displaying the most color.

All the lfs I went to cant order 150 gal that is 60 inch.
anyone have experience with glasscages.com or coast to coast customers ? They have 150 gal in 60 inches

I have a mating pair of wc Nicaraguan jaguars, if u'r interested.

They get large, so a 150 is perfect for a pair and a cat or two.

IDK if you're stocking immediately or close to NYC.. but I have some fry u'd be welcome to a few.

They just need some more time to get a little bigger.. they're less than a week at this point. IM trying to adopt them all out. ;)
j/k...im gonna raise some up myself.

thanks for the offer but I don't have the tank yet just a little 40gal

then that might be perfect as these guys need to get bigger.

If you want some and you can get 'em, no problem.

Actually a 40 gallon is fine to bring up some juvies
for a while till you get the 150.

These 9-10" ones I got were being kept in 40g tanks, at the importers... so you would have plenty of time with a 40g until you needed to move them to the 150g.
It's exactly what Im doing but I have a 55g
