I've decided to start a thread on my refurbishing and set up of a 150gallon tall tank. The tank was a great deal on craigslist, picked it up for $100 and it included the tank, stand, lids, some plants and a couple bags of gravel. tank and stand.jpg
This is what I started with. What you can't see is that the previous owner had a cat that really gouged up the stand, the faux wood trim on the tank is missing coloring in spots, and a couple of other small items here and there that I plan to fix.
The goals for the project:
1) Get everything completed on the cheap with products I already have.
2) Smooth out the scratches and dings.
3) Add a shelf on the inside to store food and chemicals. I have a piece of cedar 1x6 that will do the trick.
4) Refinish the stand. I already have some stain, hopefully it's a little darker than the current stain, and I have clear coat at home so no cost there.
5) Add some hardware to the doors to make them look and function better.
6) Paint the faux wood trim black (using Krylon Fusion).
7) Paint the back of the tank black (same paint).
8) Transfer everything from the existing 55 gallon over to the new 150 gallon and have it finished within a week... Might seem like a long time line to get those things done, but with a full time job we'll see if I'm able to get it done on time or not...

Are you going to be stripping and bleaching the wood to even the tone out? I'm just assuming if there has been a cat scratching at it that it probably has some staining as well.

And I disagree about it seeming like a long time line. I work full time as well, and that seems like a lot to get done in a week (especially with other house chores being factored in).

Good luck, hope it turns out great.

I actually had this post ready yesterday, but for some reason it never posted. At least I kept the window open and all I had to do was cut and paste it today.
I did a lot of work last night (more than i expected to get done). I sanded down the stand last night with my orbital sander to remove the scratches and dings, I got the shelf mounted with pocket screws so that i didn't have to put any holes on the outside of the stand, and I got the base stained. I'll post some pics later if I have a chance.

Well, here is the progress I made last night:

And just for fun, a pic of the Chunky Bruiser that will be moving in.

Finished up painting the trim, blacking out the back, and added clear coat to the stand and doors. No pics tonight.

Looks like install day is going to be this coming tuesday and i'm excited.
I was debating stocking (decided against the small female MiDevil my friend has) and so far there will be the Flowerhorn and my Clown Pleco. I did pick up my friends two Raphael Cats (one striped one spotted, both 3.5"). Finding another cichlid or mate for the FH might be hard now that he's pushing 6.5". I might go with a school of 6-8 silver dollars in the mean time and if a large cichlisoma shows up at the fish store i'll try that then, but i'm afraid the FH is going to be too much for a small cichlid at this point.

Primarily a ca/said theme (with the exception of the fh ). Rocks, driftwood, and fake plants will to in the tank.

Thanks! Here is the pic of the back of the tank painted.

I'm thinking I might make a trip down to Charlotte to check out what large cichlids they have at the fish stores there. Nothing at the LFS here.
With 150 gallons do you guys think if i can find a ca/sa cichlid of equal size (leaning toward another male and not a female) that they would have enough room if introduce into the tank at roughly the same time to not kill eachother? My experience has been with breeding pairs, so a mixed tank is new to me. I'm starting to shy away from a breeding pair since the LFS i use to sell my fry to has closed.
Thanks
