150 gallon wide stocking options?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
x2 oscar's
x2 bichirs (Senagals Palmas, smaller lower jaw spoecies)
x3 Silver Dollars (dithers)
Maybe a sydontis catfish to get any leavings that the silverdollars miss from the messy Oscars...Don't do a placo as they will add to an already messy load due to the Oscars.

BIG FILTERS!

I heard about florida gars are the smallest being a possable 22" I don't understand why one florida gar and a oscar wouldn't be okay together. I think that they would have plenty of room?

compatibility isn't an issue, but think about it - the gar would end up being half the length of the tank and just as wide, it would barely be able to move

Ah ok so oscars would be the biggest fish I could get right

I probably wouldn't get anything that gets over 18" unless it's an eel or something, the biggest problem with gar is just the fact that their body isn't very flexible so they take wide turns

I guess they wouldn't be smart enough to take a diaganol turn lol.. I was just hoping since I don't plant on putting decorations in the tank it'd be easier with them turning And with it being a wide tall 150 that they wouldn't have a problem: (

I'm not a big fan of those style tanks for big fish. "Monster fish" don't really care about the height, so even though it's 150 gal, you probably should aim for fish about 12".

I've seen a florida gar in a 125 before but it only grew to 17 inches but could turn fine. I myself will be getting a florida gar that will go in my 150 long tank. Then will go into the 180 im gonna buy. It takes a few years to hit 18 inches for a gar. But with you tank i would stay with cichlids that grow to about 8 inches. I have a 10 inch redhead cichlid in my 75 and hes a lil cramped with the other fish

why not a chocolate cichlid...

Because they're not for sale near me, and Ive still yet to see what they actually look like because when I look them up for sale online I dont know if its really them or not..

I'd do two oscars, some polys for the bottom (big clown loaches would be cool but hard to track down) and then something that sticks to higher level...although my senegal liked to sit in the floating fake plant. I am not familiar with gars, but I am to the point of seeing them in person and knowing they are very rigid and not flexible. As a whole, of the few oscars I have had, they are a peaceful fish so as long as something can't fit in their mouth, you are good. I don't know your filtration but you could probably throw more CA&SA cichlids in. I had a heavily overstocked 90 at one point (with an oscar, 2 jags, a flowerhorn, senegal, pleco, the pictus lookalike that gets larger cant remember name, a jewel cichlid, and I'm sure I am forgetting stuff but for the most part as long as the clay pot was in place they all got along). I also had a fx5 and AC110 on it.
