It looked like the acrylic was only an inch thick. A panel that size should have been around two inches.

i agree, and they may have also not payed enough attention leveling the surface it sat on.
too bad though, that was a kickin tank :(
 
I am really interested in the actual confirmed cause of the failure. It does appear to be about 1" thick acrylic (which is not adequate for that tank size) but may be deceiving.

If it was the acrylic thickness at fault, it shows you how important it is to use the proper materials when building such things. Take note all the plywood tank builders here, the thickness calculators ARE useful and if in doubt, go thicker.
