It's a personality thing with Midas, bull terriers of the fish world.
Not all species of amphilophus always get a hump.
I love my boy Rufus...
You could probably pull off a fahaka puffer in that tank too tbh, almost marine looking and awesome character.

I love love love puffers and didn’t even think of them! Would it have to be the sole occupant because of aggression?

Yeah, fahaka are mean sob's all alone is best.
They are cheap and readily available too, get to 15" on average iirc in an aquarium but some get bigger... Fat Homer Fat Homer will give a better idea.
Stay away from mbu as they get over 2ft, most other readily available species stay small or are brackish or impossible to find.
A fahaka would be a true pet.

That pretty much covers the basics for a fahaka and while i agree they can be real SOB’s to their tankmates (so yes expect solo fish), they can also be the aquatic version of a puppy towards their owners :)

Btw, If you go that route, also expect to feed a hard shelled diet that will include snails when young and other shelled seafoods (when older)...
