Hi. New here, I’ve been keeping African Haps and Peacocks for the past 15 years. My family and I have decided to move next year, so I’ve sold all my cichlids and the 90g tank. When we move, I plan to upgrade the tank to a 150g, I believe it’s a 72”x18x27”h. I love Geophagus cichlids. My idea to stock is:
Geophagus 6-7 (2m,4-5f)
Electric Blue Acaras 2
Severums 2-3
Denison Barb/Roseline Sharks 6-7
Plecos 2

also what Geophagus species is nicest for color and temperament? Red Head Tapajos? Sveni? Altifrons?

All suggestions are welcomed and thx in advance.

I’d leave the severums out personally, but my favorite geo is sveni. Depending on the type of plecos, the rest looks good to me.

I’m a fan of Severums. Especially since they’ll add color and they have the same temperament as the geos.

Severums get pretty big and can be territorial and can bully geos from my experience. These guys were bullied by a HRP half there size

I think that tank setup should be fine. If you love geophagus, maybe take out the acaras and sharks and do more of them, the more the merrier! Or take out the sharks and do a large catfish. But then again, I'm a huge sucker for catfish, so I'm biased. lol

Welcome aboard

Denison barbs are not really tropical species, they come from cool streams in the highlands of India where the average water temps are in the 65 - 70 F range.
Many of the other Amazonian species you list prefer water temps in the low 80sF. Geographically correct Amazon basin tetras would make much more appropriate dithers.

But if the Denisons are an important component species of the tank, Gymnogeophaagus would be a better Geo choice.
They come from southern South American countries like Uruguay and Argentina where water temps get seasonally cool, down into the 60sF at times even cooler.
Here are a couple examples

Left, is Gymnogeophagus balzani from southern Brazil, also temperate climate
Middle is Gymnogeophagus sp Paso Pache, from Uruguay
Right is Gymnogeophagus quilero, also Uruguay.
Another genus of cichlids from those cooler waters is Australoheros, from Argentina and Uruguay.

Above are Australoheros sp "red Ceiball" left in breeding dress....... right in normal color.
None of the above cichlids are obligate piscivores, so the Denisons (if large enough) would be safe, and the tank could be run without a heater, that would suit the barbs well.

I was thinking of also having two different groups of geophagus. Maybe Sveni and Altrifons, a pair of acaras for that pop of blue color. A few plecos and I do like Pictus catfish.
