I came home from work and found him dead in the water... came as a surprise as he had been doing so well and was eating loads (shrimps, earthworms etc...)... I think he was crushed by the bogwood as I did have it piled up in the one corner and when I found him dead it had all collapsed.

Not sure though...

why do bad things happen to good snake heads?

Wow! Very impressive. Your water seem pristine!

Thanks, I'm over filtering it with two Fluval FX5 filters and I have a load of activated carbon and zeolite in each filter. before I used carbon the water had a lot of tannins from the wood... been using carbon for the last year ... lots of it hehe

I have the FX5 on my 125g and I was just wondering in what baskets you use your carbon and zeolite. I have mine in the middle only and would like your input on how much to use and how many baskets to put it in. Your tank is awesome!! Just hope my oscar and pictus will be as nice as yours.

I use the bottom basket for it as its the last stage before going back into the tank... I use 2 stocking type filter bags (one for carbon & one for zeolite, and fill it up so they both fill the bottom basket)... overkill i know, but that will last roughly a month or a little longer and give pristine water quality. The carbon gives the visual effect mostly as it traps all the tannins that stain the water... the zeolite you wont visibly notice as it is for trapping ammonia and nitrates but it will make for very healthy fish.

If your water is kind of yellow, it will take about a day before it clears it all up.. the following day it will look like the fish are swimming in air, hehe :D

Don't leave carbon or zeolite in your filter for too long as once its full it will then leech it back into the aquarium... I leave mine for about a month as its a large quantity, but if you use less you should leave it in less (2 weeks or so).
