150gallons ray tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 150 as well. Mine is 6' long, 2' wide, not very tall. Ideally you want as much floor space as possible. Anyone on MFK will always insist on getting a larger tank, and they are right. But I am sure you could house a few smaller type rays. I house 2 retics (male 10 inches, female 6 inches), 1 motoro (8 inches) as well as 2 vulture catfish (12 inches). I realize I will either have to sell or upgrade tanks for the motoro and vultures once they get larger, but for the meantime they are living a happy healthy life. Just go overkill on filtration, and feed as much as they will eat. I am sure you will be able to offer the ray a better life than at the LFS. Recently i saw a 13 inch flower ray in a 12 inch wide tank! I wanted to take her home but the LFS was selling for 700. Really sad on the conditions the shops have for rays just to save a few bucks.

I keep 3 hystrix in a 2ft wide tank all 3 are 2 years old and have plenty room wish they had more but they still don't seem tough enough to go in main ray tnk

Another part of it is overall water quality, and filtration, smaller mass of water is harder to keep the parameters correct. If you are intersted ask Take Notes about his water and the changes he has seen with trying to keep rays in his smaller tank.

Yep, you can keep rays in say 150 gallons of water but I do 60% w/c every 4 days with heavy feeding and I run 2 eheim 2260s. Also I have a pack of clown loaches to clean up after the messy rays in there as well. (On a side note 3x 6" FAT datnoids as well).

Really my issues began when I removed all my sand at one point and my bio wasn't up to par since I had just introduced a 14" flower ray just a week prior in addition to my 11" orbignyi and 7"mmxmotoro and at that time 7 indo dats about 4-5".
If your going to do it in a 150 id def stick to hysrtix, retcis and MAAAAYBE some mini marbled motoros. Anything that gets larger cannot live comfortably IMO and even less if u decorate the tank. If 150gallons is where ur at, stick to the smaller rays. I'm in the process of putting together a larger tank for my pearls and BDs (different ray stock now) because the female pearl is growing at an alarming rate. Best of luck.

Forgot to mention its a 150 breeder so base is 6x2 which bought me some more time. A standard 150 I wouldn't do it with. 180 (same footprint as my 150B) is ok IMO for hystrix or other small rays but the REALITY of it is the bigger the better no matter what kind or size of ray.
