I would imagine infections on rays would work just like an infection on a human?

If the wound is caused by an another animal bacteria can be introduced from their mouth etc...

Just a guess a though

Was he kept on sand? If so how often did you clean or aerate the sand? Could be another strong case for bare bottoms. Sorry to hear about this, sounds like it was a super nice ray
 
Sorry for your loss man.....

My poly got hucked in the pond after biting a juvie ray. Haven't really trusted them since but it seemed to get along fine with the bigger rays. Guess they work sometimes and sometimes they don't. I don't and prolly won't keep them with rays anymore.
 
I would still like to know what the Nitrate readings are based on a good, fresh kit. If a Ray stops eating this could be the cause, when they run downhill the infecitions and illnesses come in.
