17-18 inch Black Ghost Knifefish (pics)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very interesting how it's got that massive, bulging head...

Might just be a feature of big size on the males, I know it is with male Dragon Knifefish too, although theirs are supposed to be longer.

I've dropped Ben Lee a message anyway, see what he says :)

Was sold to one of my locals, old owner had it a few years from 10 inch.

This 17/18 inch beast now haha

Some, but apparently not all species of black ghost will develop long snouts like the dragon knife (see photo below). These don't seem to be common imports, though. View attachment 1242101
I think what you're posting is a brown ghost knife compared to a black, but I'm no expert. I've just read the brown ones have longer snouts before and it held true from what I've seen

Long snouts are a feature of the males on BGKF when they grow to large size. The same can be said for male Dragon Knifefish too, but theirs are even longer :)

Whatever it is, I find it amazing how active and bold it is in your tank. Usually south American knives don't show themselves much in open tanks yet yours swims at the front panel. Maybe because it's so huge?

This was only when I slapped him in the tank, looking for a place to hide. Haven't really seen it since haha.

My previous 12 inch ones used to always come out and feed, even during daylight. Took a bit of training, but hope to get this one to do it too :)
Here's one of them in an old vid :)

The same is true for quite a few South American knives, including the brown ghosts....the pelicans and dragons seem to grow the longest, though.
