Hi All,

I'm purchasing my first Asian Arowana this weekend and would just like to know if there are any things I need to know when it comes to transporting him? he only has a 2 hour max journey in my car.

Its a 18" High Back Red Tail Golden Arowana and is the most expensive fish I have ever purchased so don't want to make any silly mistakes.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers
Sam

double bag it in big bags , put in a big poly box and cover the top with a towel it'll be fine , I did the same thing last week with my 18" jardini he was fine for couple of hours its getting him in the bag that was s prob for me , deep net plenty of cover so can't slip out , if you want to be sure stick an airstone in the bag of water for ten mins before you put the fish in , good luck with it however you decide to get him home

Containers better than bags... Add a battery powered air stone nd lower the temperature...
Good luck...

I've transported large cichla & rays in my "fish cooler" plenty times. I just have a hole drilled in the lid for my battery powered bubbler. That's would be my suggestion

This, and I'm the one that gave D a hefty Azul to transport.

A large tote and a battery operated air pump. Since you are only two hours away, I wouldn't even do a air pump.

Why put the fish in a bag? I see no point if you are transporting the fish in a closed tote.

Id put the fish in a bag then a poly or cardboard box for damage limitation rather than a solid plastic container , plus its easier to acclimatise the fish once you get it to your tank at the other end , seen as its only a two hour trip be ok bagged up , to be fair either way would work fine its just personal choice good luck

Yup a 19" azul did just fine in the cooler for 2+ hours.
Another friend of ours brought back 6 rays in totes on a 10+ hour trip just fine.
Either way you go good luck

You can use a big container or bag for transporting, but for catching it I would certainly recommend using a large clear heavy duty plastic bag, and drain the tank to about half. Have used this method to catch many large aros (blacks, rtg, VIP reds) and it is far easier and less likely to damage or stress the fish than using a big net.

Good luck! Anyone use meds to tranquilize your aro during transport?

I once had to move my aro from 55g to a bigger tank. I tried to bag him. So i placed the bag in the tank & had it swim inside. It swam inside the bag and SPAZ OUT like crazy that 90% of his tail ripped off.

Two months later when it recovered. I just netted him and dump him to new tank. No injuries !
