18 Tarpons in a 500g Square Tank

I am telling you from my own eyewitness account. I've been acquainted with him longer than the fishes have lived. The reason the water looks clear in the pics is because it rained for two days which means continued water top offs for as many days. He has spouts and hoses running down to the tank from the roof. I always go to his place to do odd jobs during my free time. That is why I find it hard to believe that the fishes are still alive. I'll take some more pics or even a video when the weather clears. He doesn't do WCs, the weather does. Its the truth, really.:)

He must be having fun

No need to fix what ain't broke. The black marking around the gills is normal color. I have 2 Tarpons in my 300 and they both have this black marking around the gills.

Thanks for your answer about the black markings. I'm just curious and surprised that they lived that long w/o filtration. As I mentioned, I'm fairly new to this hobby and still learning and I learned something from you today.

Maybe that explains this...a few months back he bought two 12 inch pacus from another fishkeeper who doesn't want them anymore. He put them in with his other four pacus. They looked healthy but after 2 weeks they stopped eating and died on the 3rd week.

With pretty reasonably/regular rain this would work- 500G is a lot of water and it sounds like it's catching from the roof. How much does it rain in Guam? Seasonal?
Tarpon (well, at least Caribbean version) are obligate air-breathers, so no matter what the O2 levels in the water they're groovy. Tarpon are also incredibly tough- quite comfortable in some pretty vile and/or toasty water. Their scales are heavy and their skin slime is thick, viscous.... and stinks- you can't wash it off your hands without serious effort. Physically and chemically armoured against half-assed husbandry ;)

x 2 for this. Indo-pacific tarpon around here live in some pretty stank pools for long periods of time between rain, they are damn tough and being able to gulp air gives them a serious one-up.

lol half-assed husbandry :D
