18' x 9' x 3.5' catfish tank build in progress.....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Going to get up super early tomorrow and give it a good go! I'll have until 3p.m. to do as much as possible. First order of buisiness is a trip to the scrap yard to gather funds, then a trip to the lumber yard to gather materials. It's important for everyone to remember that this tank is being built soley on funds other than what I make at my job. The first materials came from my tax relief check from the IRS, and this second round will come from scrap metal. The third will come from an on the side project that will be up on here shortly also. So sorry today will be a dull day on this thread. The possibility is that nothing will happen on here. Although I could sneak out and do another row while the wife's still asleep.......

Even though you are doing this on a budget, one things I've learned about everything is that even when on a budget and DIY'ing don't skimp on on stuff that could bite you in the butt in the end. This includes spending time with your wife instead of working on the project sometimes :D.

Anyway, standard procedure for a thread like this:

lol, well unless you guys want the same pics today there will be none until tomorrow. I'm saving up now for the glass, but don't know if I will have enough for it right away when the tank itself is finished up! I still have to price out the glass, and that's a scary proposition for me!!! Some of my inlaws live in Nebraska btw X24.

you might actually want to price out acrylic for this. It'll stand up a little better, be a lot lighter, make a better viewing window, be easier to work with and it might end up a little cheaper from what i hear.

What town? Any chance you are gunna visit your inlaws anytime :D?

LOL- No Necro, I am not a 5 foot 7 inch blonde with pigtails, a school girl outfit, and 6 inch heels. Im a 6 foot 1 inch 230 lb guy....

Am I the first to nominate this as a sticky?

Looking great necro... love to see more pics soon and hope you can scrape the funds together and finish it before winter. :naughty::nilly::popcorn::headbang2

Too bad! lol.;) Yeah your explaination of yourself seems a lil more scary than mine:WHOA: It would be cool if it could be stickied, but not looking for it. Hopefully there will at least be a link in the diy compilation sticky!

Yeah problem is finding acrylic in nowhere montana. There's a fairly cheap glass shop, but can't find thick acrylic anywhere. All the glass shops here mainly do residential windows, and car windows. I havn't found any that can get plate larger than 3/4", and I might need thicker. glass height will be around 32".

Me too! Thanks guys. Taking in about 100 lbs of cans, and about another hundred of an aluminum garage door, and about a ton of steel.

Hastings and Grand Island is where my inlaws are from, and omaha. Doubt we'll be visiting anytime soon!

Yeah you're gonna want to use glass for this bad boy... I'd go about 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch (I'd probably go with the 1 1/2 inch, can never be sure about water pressure hehe.)
:nilly:

Plus glass adheres to silicon MUCH better than acrylic and glass looks better and doesn't scratch as easily.
