I feel for you and the fishes. its -32 here right now and I had to move a tank further away from a winow cause the heater couldnt keep up. outside with the windchill it was -47C here. I was so glad when my work day was done and I could head home and be inside for the rest of the evening.

Yeah the other night our wind chills were -55 f. I was really worried. I was out in the garage every hour that night. The heaters were running non-stop and I think that wore them out. The garage hit like 18 F. that night. It's difficult. I just have to keep reminding myself that no matter how bad it gets this winter I'll have this nice big tank up and running for next winter with some safety measures in place. First thing is this new tank will be mostly sealed so that evaporation will not be an issue, and I'll have to come up with a system of air exchange for it. At any rate. I plan on working in the garage tomorrow cleaning up some. I'll see if I can't get some work done on the tank also!

Man I'm glad I live in good old South Africa!!! The coldest it's been here in Cape town last winter was 10C but it's summer now with an average temp. of 26-28C. Like I said glade I'm not over there with you guys winter their sucks!

I feel your Pain Necro... I have some tanks running in the small garage this year... which I havn't before... (to many tanks since I started collecting cats last year I've almost doubled the number of tanks) and it' was getting pretty damn cold in there till I got the heater working and I had to put in a second one last week since the temp was dipping down to the 20 mark even with the baseboard heater running full blast (the big garage ones keep up fine but this garage has an OLD Small one)

Now it's a nice and toasty 30 in there :D... the extra temp in the room is helping the tanks to not use their heaters (cheaper on electricity)

Ummm.... no... my little garage holds alittle over 1500 gallons of tanks... there are 22 tanks in there right now.... Min 15 of those are 100 watt heaters there are 5 ish that are 200 watts and the 2 biger tanks use 600 and 700 watts respectivly so thats in the reagion of 4k watts vs the one 500 and the 750 room heaters... which hardly run ( the garage isn't all that big so it doesn't take a whole lot...not to mention once the space is heated it doesn't take much to maintian the heat.

Trust me If i shut off the room heaters then I can watch my hydro meter speed up... so they are doing the right thing for sure.
