18' x 9' x 3.5' catfish tank build in progress.....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here's a quick crappy sketchup that I threw together to get some ideas going. The bottom portion is the 300 gal pond that I have set up right now. The big boy is in there for the time being but will be switched to the 350 once the other cats go into the big tank. The glass you see will actually be a wooden top that I will seal much the same as the tank. There will be three holes cut out for some filter socks. I've never used filter socks so if someone can tell me if this would be enough for mechanical I'd love to hear from ya. If not I have other plans also. Once the water passes into the center of the trough there will be three pumps located there. Two 5,000 gph pumps, and an 1800 gph pump. The 1800 gph pump is a return for a rugf I'm planning. The other two have their own barrels to feed water too. The white things are barrels that will sit on the wood just above the trough. The water will be pumped up to the top where a specially designed spray bar will spray water down through the biological material of choice. Once the water fills the barrels a lil over half way it will fall through the return pipes over top of the tank down through the water column. This should creat a very nice areation of the tank. I'm also thinking of sectioning off the sides where the pumps will be so that I can add lava rock, crushed coral, ect, whatever I might need. The center will be wide open and I could possibly house trouble makers in that section until big enough to go in the main tank. So let me know what you guys think. I know it's crappy, but only had a couple of mins to work on it.

oh, and the pic:D

looks pretty good in my opinion. so going back to an external filter again. that is gonna be an awesome setup and look forward to seeing more progress. I hope it all goes well with the big lift that is a project in itself to move something that large without flexing it. in the long run your patience and persistance will pay off. this will be the most unique tank built that I have found on MFK. great job.

I'm glad you went back to the external filtration option. I think it looks alot better.

I certainly think that external filtration will make maintenance a doddle, seems like a great build so far.. Get it finished so we can all come visit :)

I heart filter socks! I have them on every tank that I built a filter for. The trick is though they are too efficient and clog pretty quick. So I just have an extra set and switch them out once a week. Then you throw them in the wash machine with a 10 or 15% bleach and water mix and then they are good as new. Works great, very low maintenance.

Looks pretty nice. If you do end up keeping it as a permanant tank, you should make a room around the filters to hide from sight. Doesn't really matter, seing that much water with fish in it is going to look sweet.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate all the support. It's gonna be tough to order the stuff to seal with on wensday. Some unexpected bills to pay!!!! I'm gonna count the money in my fish fund jar and see what I've gotten so far, plus I have a customer's tank tomorrow, and I'm gonna try to give plasma today. We'll see how that works out. Glad to hear that some of you love filtersocks so much. Now the only question is what micron to get? Seems that most are 100 microns. Not sure which is a finer mesh, 100 or 200? Never really investigated microns lol
