180 gallon aquarium sump / plumbing.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1200gph at the output would be the highest. I have a thread but very little pics of plumbing. ragin_cajun ragin_cajun gots the info! :D

Would I be able to do 2 open drains fully submerged (one on each corner flowt), 1 emergency drain and use the other hole in that corner overflow to do the return instead of running 2 full separate Herbies or this wouldn't work

This is the thread you seek..... https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/...e-community-build-thread.423425/#post-5206514

twentyleagues twentyleagues gave you the playbook above. You just need some detail and pics--that's what JC's sa/ce build thread (link above) is for.

Also, of lesser value, this thread has a link to a video I posted showing my sump and drains. https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/sump-design-questions.674547/#post-7579716

If you search around on here, you can find a write up I posted several times explaining different sump designs, pump sizing, why a sump is better than a canister filter for large tanks.

Thanks alot, I read the whole thread regarding the 300 gallon aquarium

Thank you so much took a look at the 300 gallon thread and it has helped tremendously! Now I will take a look at yours to get even more info. Thanks again

I wouldn't. Less room for error. Id run a lower flow maybe 600gph if you do as your emergancy can only handle 600gph if you only have 1 thats asking for trouble. If I were to do it again id have drilled a tank myself with 3 1.5" or 2" holes and did an actual herbie set up.

Oh okay got it , so I'll do it like yours and have the return running in the middle of the aquarium. Did you have your return a 1" pipe as well or smaller?

So I should get a smaller return pump is that what you mean by running a lower flow or meaning reduce the valve for s lower flow? (sorry if this sounds dumb)

I run a herbie in my 125 with the two corner overflows. Two full siphon and just a trickle down the emergency drains on each side. It's dead silent and I almost never have to adjust it. My return is 1" and tees to two 1" outlets over the top of the tank.

By any chance you wouldn't have pictures? Do you also have tees connecting the main drain and emergency drains underneath the tank or do you just have two separate herbies running straight down to the sump?

My sump is actually in the basement. It's set up as two separate herbies. There are four lines running into the sump. If you teed drains together you'd be cutting their capacity in half. Here are a couple pics of my current setup. Btw...gate valves are your friend. They make it much easier to fine tune things vs a ball valve.
