I'll be setting up a 180 shortly. I'd like some advice on filtration.

It will be stocked with:
3 oscars 7", 10", 12"
1 BGK 9"
1 Clown Knife 16"
3 EBJD 6" to 7"

Iv'e been recomended to use 2 405 Fluval canisters. Do you think this would be sufficient? I do 50% WC every week on all my tanks. And will do the same on my 180. A friend also recommended 2 450 fluval canisters? If thats what they are, theyre an option as well. I want to have alot of filtration and movement.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

For me,

Option 1, 1 x wet/dry sump setup and fluval fx5 as the secondary. If i cannot run a sump for whatever reason then I would use option 2.

Option 2 2 x Fluval fx5's

Never rely on only one filter to service the tank, always split the load up between multiple filters. That way if one filter fails, you still have the other filter to keep your system running.

Thats great thinking rhodes. I def dont want to do a sump tho. Do you know what the gph for the fluval x5 is?

awesome. Do you remember what you got your fluval fx5 for?

they are pretty pricey, but all good canisters are. I bought my fx5 for $225 brand new shipped with some bio and extra filter pads from a vendor on here over a year ago. I think they have gone up in price some since then but $250ish should still be possible. You can try to find a used one on here people are selling them occasionally.

I know it sucks dropping that much money on a filter but I bought an FX5 and it does a fantastic job as both a mechanical and bio filter. If you put 2 on a 180 your fish would love you for it!
