I plan on purchasing a 180 gallon in the next month and was wondering what type of filtration it will require. It will be in my bedroom and my experiences with sumps in the past is they can make loud slurping noises and I wouldn't enjoy waking up to that early in the morning interrupting the little sleep I get, damn engineering degrees.. I was wondering what people thought would be my best option, I currently have the smallest eheim classic and ecco(?) filters running on my 75, but was planning on selling those with the 75. Thanks.

Fast answer.. I plan on keeping a barred midas, breeding pair of motas, a large oscar and maybe some oddballs.

O.K. then What I would do would be to get an Aquaclear 110 (if you have enough room on your hood get two of them), Then get a Filstar XP3 for ~$100, then choose either a Fluval FX5, or Eheim Professional 3, or Eheim Professional 2. With 1 AC, 1 XP3, and the Pro 3 (my choice) you would have theoretically 1200 GPH of flow, which would probably decrease a couple hundred GPH after you add media, but thats still 8-10X turnover rate and IMO can handle just about anything you put in there.

I have an fx5 and a wet dry running on my 180. The fx5 runs so quiet I can barely hear it with my ear pressed up against it. No water trickle sound like with the wet dry and no need to prime it. The two filters keep my water crystal clear. I am considering selling my wet dry and running two fx5's.

If I was going to do it all over again I would go with a Pro3 and an FX5...You get the superior bio filtration from the pro3 and the superior mech filtration from the FX5...

Pricey but like you said if you have little time to sleep, then you have even less time to worry about tearing down filters and cloudy water...

It looks like I may be getting a 125 after doing some cost analysis, I just can't afford the price tag of a 180 and accesories, however, I'd still like to know what my filtration options would be on a 125, thanks.

Get an Aquaclear 110 and an FX5 Great Mechanical Filtration from an FX5, and the Great Bio/Chemical of the Aquaclear

AC110's are still a mech filter. Same with the FX5. I would get one good mech filter, and one good bio filter. Eheims pro 3's and pro 3e's are both great bio filters. FX5's are great mech filters, but are very energy inefficient, and heavy. I'd run dual AC110s and a pro 3 or pro 3e. If you want to go cheaper, an eheim pro 2 2028 and AC110s would also do well.
