Great thread lots of info. +1 on the loisellei never kept them but always wanted to.

I rememeber duanes telling me once that he had allot success keeping fish that do not normay come in contact in the wild. Some food for thought.

Great thread. Thanks for bringing the calvary. And they do like pretty cool and same with fastae. And thats still an option for me. Just need help with ehat others have had success with and quantities! Quantities are going to be my biggest struggle since ill just keep adding threes of everythung or something

In my 180 I had a non mating pair of bifasciatus, originally 6 thorichthys helleri, and a pair of cryptoheros saljica. I had aggression issues with the helleri think I needed a group of ten or more. Now I have 2 male helleri 1 Male pasionis and a pair of saljica plus the biffa's, so far so good

Another thing to consider is what fish are most readily available to you? I appreciate the appeal of fish that are hard to obtain - but with cichlids the order and timing of when you introduce fish can impact the likelihood of success.

Same thing with planted tanks. If you're planting out your tank - especially if you keep cichlids that are notorious diggers, you want to get the plants in first without any fish for at least a couple or few weeks to allow the roots time to establish.

So, if you're an impatient person (like me) waiting for just the right fish could be a deal breaker for you.

Just something to keep in mind.
