Below is a 440 gal enclosure., it was 8ft L x 5 ft W, a fairly large footprint.

It was not large enough to keep one species of Paratilapia, from killing the other.
They searched each other out, to do battle to the death in that amount of space

The pool was fine later , for more non-aggressive types, where species looked radically different from each other.

Are mesoheros gephyrum well tempered
 
I kept that Mesohero's in a 150 gal community with cichlids that looked radically different with good success.

I would not keep it with similarly iridescent spotted cichlids like JDs or Andinoacara, or any cichlid of a similar shaped body of mouth (ie JDs).
You'll notice in the community shot they were housed with Geophgines, which they ignored.
When young, they could probably be grown out together, young - small cichlids perceive safety in numbers.
But when mature, cichlids see anything that looks similar, as competition.
