you mentioned a metal stand. does it have 4 legs? if so, that concentrates the full weight of the tank onto the area of the 4 feet, which can be a major issue.

with that kind of weight, you can have the feet literally begin to 'punch through' the flooring..

I agree... having a wooden stand can relieve pressure points from metal stands... and distribute the weight some what evenly...

don't get me wrong - I prefer a well made steel stand to any wooden one from the LFS.

but I have always had them over concrete flooring, so the problem of the weight of the four legs is eliminated..
