185 Gallon Equipment???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Halides are unnecessary for the sump you're not going to have any corals down there. I'm running a daylight 100 watt equivalent fluorescent bulb (screw-in) on my 20 gallon long sump, and my chaeto is really taking off; it also worked pretty good for the mangrove propagules I had in there before I had to remove the DSB.

You could probably stick the live rock used for seeding the main aquarium in the sump after it's seeded the main rock structure if you want to make all the rocks match in the main aquarium as well as avoid having to buy more rock for the sump.

Also, be sure to keep the pump's gph under what the overflows can handle; that's really the main restraining factor when it comes to the pump.

if i were you, i would just wait and buy it all at once. Alot can happen in 18 months if i read correctly. Price drop on items or better equipments or updated versions of it can be released etc etc.

That's a good idea for the rock. I want everything to look the same and was concerned about the dry rock satnding out against the live. So I will be using your idea to keep everything uniform in the tank. Also I know nothing about the plumbing of a tank. How will I know what the overflows can handle without testing them out with a pump and slowly increasing the flow until I can tell it's too much for them to handle. I guess I can ask the guy I'm buying it form and see what he used. Is there another way of knowing other than buying a pump and testing it out?

Yeah I'm still up in the air on what I'm going to buy ahead of time if anything and what i'm going to hold off on getting. I kinda want to have a lot of it figured out at least that way when the time comes I am ready for setup. Even if I hold off on buying everything, I will still have an idea on what is needed and what works best.

I've never heard of this brand - Hy-drive - the prices seem super cheap to me for the output and their is no customer rating. The problem with goin' cheap on large externals or submersibles is noise and longevity. A pump runnin' 1400 gal per hr can be very annoying if your not careful.

The Lil' Giant 3MDQX-SC @ $200 is more popular and not too loud, these pumps can run for a seriously very long time.

Ok, thanks. I will look into those. I would much rather have something built for quality and that will last a long time over trying to save a few bucks. Someone told me DANNER Mag drives are good as well. Any experience with these or no?

Pondmaster Mag Drives by Danner- I've got some (7's and 12's) still running that are close to if not 20 years old.

I run a Mag pump. It's dead quiet.

The first time I hooked my sump up, it took me a few to dial in the overflow to match the pump output. I did not get a lot of sleep that fist night put it that way LOL

Once you figure out how to dial in though, it will run perfect. I used gate valves versus ball valves. The gates are bulkier, but seem to give me more control. I was getting frustrated with the pvc balls because they were too hard to make small adjustments.
