19inch goonch catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pics of both?

When I look at the big one above, all I see is rutilus. However, I'll admit that there is a severe lack of large goonches other than HLG to compare it to. I don't see what else it could be, though.
I saw a picture of a Bagarius Lica not too long ago...... I think it looks strikingingly similar to my goonch..... also my goonch is growing too fast for a rutilus it is growing at around a inch a month.

Dream tank right here.. only thing missing is more bichirs lol what type of Lates specie is that? Korean or Japanese? Doesnt look like any barra or nile ive seen, its awesome

It was sold as a nile but it could be a korean or japanese...... i will have to get it ID'd LOL!

I agree as well. When you first showed us, it had rutilus written all over it but now I'm not seeing the bright orange/red fins that rutilus are known for. It also doesn't really look like this 1. View attachment 996805

Yep that is the image what i think of when comparing it to my goonch..... mine is slightly too flat to be rutilus..... but it doesn't look like a LLG or HLG either.

I'm not sure. The banding on yours looks too thick to be a lica. But then again there are some resemblance but by color alone, yours is extremely light compared to them but that's not a good way to id them. A collection point would help immensely if you're able to find out

My tank has very bright lighting thats why it appears to be brighter. And i will ask the place where i bought it from the catch location! And My friend thinks its the Lica because of the lateral line on the fish...... It resembled his Lica alot.

Looking back through this thread and at recent pictures- on my laptop, not phone- I think I see what you're talking about. Color rendition on my phone isn't nearly as good as it is on my high end computer.

Yes, I hooked my computer back up just to respond to this thread. lol

The colors definitely aren't right for rutilus. The body and head shape are insufficiently dorsolaterally compressed for B. bagarius or B. yarrelli. It is way too thick for B. suchus. It's clearly too big for B. cf. dwarf. That really makes you wonder.

Given the available evidence, must agree that the fish is likely B. lica. The confusion arises from the fact that B. lica and B. rutilus are likely the most closely related to one another and share many traits such as the sausage shaped body, smaller fins and oval eyes.

If you wish to have this fish endorsed as likely the first confirmed B. lica in the hobby (at least since Matt and I brought them into the mass cultural awareness of the hobby), I will need the following photographs:

• Headshot, close, in profile.
• Detailed shots of the eye(s).
• Shot of the dorsal fin.
• Full body side shot.
• The collection point would make it academic.

I look forward to seeing what comes of this. If we can confirm this fish as lica, I would be VERY interested in using one or more of your pictures in the upcoming Guide to Identifying your Goonch (Bagarius).

PS- Was your friend Matt?

MY friend is an Indonesian guy named Yudhistira... He doesn't use MFK forums at all but he has the most impressive fish collection i have ever seen!
