The USS Lexington's wreckage has been located in the Coral Sea by the crew of research vessel Petrel, owned by billionare explorer Paul Allen. The Lexington was damaged by Japanese forces in the world's first carrier vs carrier battle during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942.
The carrier's wreck, which rests some 500 miles off the eastern coast of Australia and about two miles below the water surface was discovered Sunday.
Photo images taken by the searchers show many intact features such as the ship's name painted on different surfaces, and a nearly intact fighter plane still bearing U.S. star emblems.

A cool find indeed, just trapped in time down there. It's pretty crazy to think that it survived so well after so long.

Hopefully, there will be more expeditions to fully document and explore this wreck in the coming months :)

Imagine the giant old moray eels and God knows what else that might be lurking in that wreck.

Yeah no kidding. I heard great barracudas like to hang around wrecks, and so do some species of sharks. Two miles underwater? The possibilities are nearly endless...

Cool, they're not fighters, though. The top one is a Douglass Devastator, and the bottom one is a Douglass Dauntless. They are both dive/torpedo bombers.

Do u think there's anything interesting on board? I believe there's still a misplaced atomic bomb (was gonna be dropped on Japan, but war ended and plane is thought to have crashed)

Thanks for the clarification.

I bet there might even be some canned food still down in the galley....not that I would want to open any of them.

Yeah, it's from early in the war. Nothing fancy. Gold? Uranium? Nah, we got canned food.
