Hey I'm new here, I've only posted a few time but I've been looking around for awhile. I keep snakes and turtles but I've recently have become interested in fish and planted tanks. I've looked at a lot of the ones on here and they look awesome. I've built several vivariums before and I enjoy doing it so this is right up my ally.

I've recently reorganized my room (senior in high school, still living at home) and moved my animals around and I have this, what I believe to be a 36g tank with stand. I got it from a friend two years ago, it was his aunts reef fish tank but I guess it had a leak in it and was throwing it out. Since then I've just used it to house a corn snake and a black rat snake(not at the same time of course!).

I've resealed the sides and have it filled with water at the moment to check for leaks. Its been about 4hours now and I've been checking it hourly and so far it seems like I got where ever the leak was.

Now once I'm sure its 100% ok I'll start working on this. I'm hoping to possibly make a paludarium although I don't think I'll be putting anything in that would use the land and it would just be for looks, so the land would probably not be very high at all and just be for short plants. I'm not sure if I'm going to do a paludarium yet though because it might not be enough room to work with. The tank is 36"L x 12"D x 20"T, and I want enough room to house a decent number of decent sized fish.

For inhabitants all I have in mind so far are a pair of rams, a snail that isn't to harsh on the plants, and maybe a colony of ghost shrimp or another similar species of shrimp. Any other ideas would be awesome.

I'm hoping to use this thread to help me with any questions I have along the way, if anyone wants to give me tips, and as a journal to post updates as I construct it. Heres what I'm working with so far.

and a cool picture of my snapping turtle I thought I'd just throw out there lol.

Are you thinking of going with a high-tech setup with Pressurized Co2 or are you going for Low-tech?

Probably closer to the low tech end of the spectrum. I've thought about doing one of those DIY Co2 bottles using yeast and sugar but I'm sure that wouldn't make a huge difference. I don't want to get to complicated as this is my first try at this type of tank.

What kind of lighting are you looking at? If you want to be in the Low-tech catagorie I think most people will tell you to go with a T8 fixture.

I am using DIY Co2 on my 75 gallon (But getting a pressuried system for X-mas). It's very cool to watch.

Is the fixture you have right now just the normal one bulb t12 fixture?

IMO if i was to spend my money on 1 item for a new planted tank it would be a good fixture.

I just bought a Zoo Med AquaSun T-5 HO Double Light Linear Fluorescent Hood fixture for my 30G tank and it's perty :D

It can be hung from wires which will make any tank look like a million dollars.

I've only had this fixture for a month now so i know nothing of its longevity.

I'm guessing, so i will have to get a new one I guess.

Also I've had the tank completely filled with water for over 24hours and no leaks what so ever. So I must've gotten where the leak was coming from so I guess the next step if figuring out the design I'm going to do and getting the proper equipment.

Read the lighting a planted tank sticky at the top to figure out how much PAR you will be wanting.

So you want to stay in the lowlight. I would find a T5HO fixture with 2 bulbs and see if you can run only one bulb at a time. If you were to hang it 25 inches from the top of your substrate that would give you 45 micromols (?) of PAR which is right at the top of lowlight or very bottom of mid light. After you got it planted you could play around with the height of the fixture to see what gives you good growth with minimal algea. Then in the future if you want to go High-tech (Which shouldn't take very long IMO) you can add the other bulb.
