I'm shutting down 1 of my fish tanks this coming weekend and I would like some suggestions for a easy to care for reptile. I have never had a repitle before and would also need advise on all decoration, heating material and lights that are required for a specific species. The tank is 26 gallons with odd measurements. 48"L x 13"H x 9"W. The previous owner of the tank used to have an Iguana in there so I still have a mesh lid for the tank. I like Leopard geckos but the Tokay's (sp?) really caught my eye. Any suggestions are welcome.

research first.. Some reptiles are different than others.. They can be fun.

If you do not want the lizard to hold then a tokay would be great. Although they need a higher cage and I don't know what a 26 gallon is. On the other hand a leo can be held and is also very pretty. You can get all different forms of leos. I had one of those jungle phase ones with the bright yellow and black that I got at petsmart for $20. They are very cool. I would think about them.

I just looked at your post agian and saw the measurements. That deffinatly would not be good for a tokay. It would be awsome for a leo though. You could even get a trio of them and try to breed. Remember though the males will try to kill eachother. So either all females or just one male.

Go with Leopard Geckos. Get yourself 1 male and 3 females. Do some research before hand and you'll be alright.

Yeah i was gonna say get some leopard geckos. Tokays are really really mean... they bite! Leopard geckos are very easy to care for. You shouldnt have more then one male gecko per tank, but you can keep more then one female per tank. The best substrate is probably paper towels, very easy to clean the tank out :) . Alot easier to care for then fish besides getting the live food. If you keep the male and a couple females you will probably be able to breed them.

try anoles a few people will say theyre boring not so, the males display can be amazing to watch and they are easy to care for and breed with the right conditions what ever your choice pick a spieces and google it - the more you know the less chance of any diasters happening ........note : a tank that size would be difficult to keep clean if you go with a high humidity speices stick with the drier guys the waste is easier to manage hope this gives you some help FNH.............

Tokays are easy starters but be aware that they are fiesty little farts that bite and bark at you when messed with. I have a pair that does fine in a 15g (24"Lx 12 1/2"Wx 13"T) tank with a heating pad stuck under one end. The tank contains branches to climb on and a gravel substrate as well as a water bowl that looks like bark. There is also some spaghnum moss in there to hold humidity. This type lizard does not require UV lights. They share the tank with a small land hermit crab. They get fed mainly crickets dusted with repti-cal and also beetles and moths, moths are their favorites. they shed regularly and I have had one for just over a year and the other for about 2.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess I'm gonna look into Leopard's first. I'm glad to hear that I can keep more then 1 though.
