1st Salt Water tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you will need metal halide lighting for the clam and anenome and your tank needs to be running for at least 6 months before you add either of them. the fish list is a little big and the tank is on the small side for any tang. the diamond goby will starve in a few months unless you can get it to eat food instead of sift the sand.

i would reevaluate the list a little.

I would never ever use any substrate with a particle size larger than a grain of sugar in a reef tank. All it does is become a big detritus sponge and it will cause huge nitrate problems down the road. Your clam might enjoy that but, your corals and anems will just sort of wilt away to nothing unless you have 0 fish. Then it will take it longer but, it will still happen.

Are lps and polyps coral good for beginners i like these are the coral i realy like are they all good for a first timmer:
Bubble Coral (plerogyra simusa)

Glove Polyp (Clavularia sp.)

Blue Spurce Calstrea Caulastrea furcata)

Brain Coral (Lobophyllia hemprichii)

Tube Coral (Tubastraea sp.)

Colony Polyp (zoanthus sp.)

again thanks for all the help there is just so much to consider i dont want to put any i cant handle thrugh any undo stress.

As mentioned be sure to let your tank cure before adding fish.
And be sure to have a lid of some kind on the top of the tank. I bought a goby - the LFS never told me hey jump. He did the very next morning. I bought a plastic grate from HomeDepot - my next Goby took 3 days and he found a way out.
I have 2 Saddle Clowns(blk./wh) and they are just as nice as the orange.
I too am new at all this, since May. But love the results. I just bought a skimmer 3 weeks ago and placed it in my old 55 gal. tank.
Keep reading - lots of luck - you'll enjoy

Fairy wrasses are quite expensive. Anemones & clams shouldn't be added until the tank's parameters have been completely stable for at least 6 months-1 year.

your fish list seems fine just add the wrasse near the end as they can be finicky eaters and need good water. as far as the corals i agree with the halides for the anenome and clam, but the rest are all good with t5 or compacts (t5's being slightly better)

use a great skimmer and have lots of flow
