i was there last month lol and i loved it. you dont have to get tickets in advance but definitely see everything. theres definitely more people in the saltwater sections as oppose to the freshwater and its tough to get good pics because it gets packed.

I just went back in October and its worth every penny. I'd say at least 5 hours to just walk the place, if you stop to observe you may need more. The ca/sa section was pretty cool they even had about a 5ft arapiama and I remember one 3-4ft silver arowana. I just got my computer back so I have to put all my pics back on it but I'll try to put up some pics. safe trip have fun
if you go on a weekday it will be less crowded 
i love going to the shedd, but i think it only takes me about 3-4 hrs to go through it. they also have the planetarium about a half block away, and across from the shedd is the field museum. and i think the museum of science and industry is up the road too. i think your ticket from the shedd gets you into the field museum (i think). but if you do everything, you could definately end up being down there for the whole day.
