1st water change help....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You've already gotten a ton of advice so I'll ask my dumb questions anyway.:)

It sounds like this is a new setup. What method did you use to cycle the tank ?

What are the existing tank water parameters ?

Howdy,

Key are your nitrate levels. What are your nitrate levels?

BTW: I merged your threads from different forums. Please only start one thread for each topic in the most appropriate place.

Thanks :)

you are going to have dark water around 5-6 months, until your driftwood stop releasing a lot of tannins, but it always will for years, each time in less quantity, these tannins are beneficial for the piranhas, they feel less stressed. don´t worry

Well proud to say that my 1st water change went without a hitch....(knock on wood) I did my water change Sunday....

I took out about 30% out of my tank, siphoned the gravel ( wish I could of done a better job though), added prime and some cycle conditioner my LFS guy recommended...

This next day my Nitrate and Ammonia Levels where a little high but as of today all levels Nitrate, Nitrite, PH, Ammonia levels are great....

Water got a tad bit clearer, but like everyone says it will take some time...

Btw anyone have any ideas how to siphon gravel more efficiently...when I was siphoning it seemed to suck more water than crap....?

Your ammonia level was high ! It seems that your tank is not fully cyced, which means problems in perspective. Your test kit should never detect any trace of ammonia and nitrites. The water changes objective is too keep nitrates as low as possible.

What are your basic params ? 1) ammonia; 2) nitrites; 3) nitrates.

Get used to the yellow water if you wanna keep your driftwood. I've had driftwood in my puffer tank for about 10 months and the water starts to yellow a few days after water change. A lot of people like the yellow effect, it's harmless to fish.

Umm, there should never be any levels of nitrite or ammonia unless the tank is uncycled, you have poor filtration or you're not keeping up on your water changes. And you did mention that the tank was only a month old..........
