The spines on most fish are to prevent it from being eaten, so unless the catfish is inside the other fish mouth, it wouldn’t do much damage. I’ve seen fish of similar size bully similar sized spiny fish, but the spines usually did nothing towards the bully.
I meant if he doesnt fight back, then the paradise fish keeps hitting the spines and eventually dies

It really is a 50/50 for me too, I just had to pick the cat because it seems easier for a cat to kill a fish than the other way around.
im more like 75/25 cause sitting there and letting the defence do the damage is pretty unreasonable. the only chance of the catfish winning is if it rammed into the paradise fish
