I've got 5(6") in a 60breeder... Just have to over filter & do weekly WC's...cause as stated they are messy... Good luck and have fun... Oh I also painted the sides and back black and now they don't act so skittish..

dis one website show me that [
https://www.msu.edu/~torresm2/piranhabehavior.html ]

it said:

  1. How many piranhas can I keep in a ___ gallon tank? This is a rough list but here goes.

30 gallon tank
    One piranha

55 gallon tank
    Three piranhas

75-90 gallon tank
    Four to Five Piranhas

125 gallon tank
    Five to Seven Piranhas

is it true???

I would suggest either going with a solo red belly or find another species. When those guys get above 7 or 8 inches, that tank isn't going to be big enough. It will suffice for the time being, just not long term. I'm moving my solo 6 inch rbp from a 29g to a 55g here soon, and this will be big enough to maintain him for life. Not only that, the frequency of water changes also drops when you only have 1 fish in a large tank.
