Money's kind of tight and I was considering these two options. Already have a 405 so I was thinking of either selling the 405 and buying a FX5 or keeping it and buying an additional 405. My question is, would two 405's be weaker, equal or stronger than a single FX5 for a 100 gallon. Thanks in advance.

I could be wrong, but I believe that one FX5 would be better than two 405's

one FX5's will filter a LOT more water than 2 405's. and i believe that running one motor even though it's a more powerful motor, will cost less in electricity in the long run.

if that is going to be the only filtration on that tank, then i would go with the FX5. i just got one on ebay for $159.00 a few weeks ago.. that's less than half the retail price. and less than i paid for 2 405's together on ebay a week later (the 405's were $86 each, still far less than retail).

seriously.. I bought two for 205 (each) when the pricing limits were going up... 159 would have rinsed my pants out in a good way.

well, i got lucky, i was the only bidder on the one i got. either way, i've seen them sell for as little as $175.. my limit on FX5's is $200. that is always my max bid. and my max bid for the 405's is usually $90.. i don't think they are actually worth more than $80 (my opinion only). you used to be able to buy the most updated 404 that is almost identical to the 405 for $60 all of the time (i have a bunch of those).

my opinion is.. that 1 FX5 beats 2 405's hands down.

wouldnt two 405 hold more media then one fx5?

I thought so. But the FX5 still has more flo and prefilter lol. The FX5 is literally a shop vac for your tank.

Only advantage of the two 405s over the FX5 would be the redundant filtration. If you go with just the FX5 you better have some kind of plan for if the FX% were to quite working. Depending entirely on a single filter could lead to a disaster with your aquarium.

Very good point...

I have loads of datnoides in a 100G tank, hence for
for 2 years, been running on 2 nr. 405 's and 1 XP3 reina. ALL cannisters stuffed with BIO rings.

Decided to get rid of the reina and 1 of the 405's. and then add FX 5.

Realised, on changing over, I had 33% / or 1 whole 405 canister-worth of my old BIO ring..or with no where to put in. Thats right...all 3 old externals, held 100% bio rings in qty.

WIth 1 fx 5 and 1 nr, 405, both held only 67% bio. I was a little worried over the sudden decrease in bio filtration. But 2 months later... there are no problems or nitrate spikes.

I guess all the rings in the new fx 5 were well mature, and the stronger flow rate has compensated.:D
