2.5 gallon suggestions

Simple low light plants will keep it interesting. Just some basic freshwater fish will get boring pretty quick. A pair of shell-dwellers would be sweet.
.If you go cory better 2 then 1. You could get an otto(Otocinclus affinis ) for the algae.

You sure you couldn't cram a 20 or a 29gal in there somewhere? I managed to fit a 100gal in my dorm room!!! Just had to sleep in a sleeping bag on the floor, but it was totally worth it! 
A single dwarf Crenicichla would actually look pretty dope in there, although it would be a little better if you had a 5gal instead. Not much larger, but definitely a little more room to work with.
Crenicichla notophthalmus, and a few cardinal tetras, would be a cool little five gal!
Biotoecus opercularis would be another cool little dwarf that would be perfect for a tank that size.
