2 aquariums exchanged water while I was asleep..

If the humidity in the room was low, there was a large surface area of the two water containers, and there was a big enough concentration difference of salt (ionized solute), then I believe it is possible.

The cord might have been punctured and then water got inside the coating and started to spread through the cord by capillary action. Once it got far enough, a syphon effect could have took over.

Intriguing and very good idea. None of my teachers knew of this concept, so I never saw the experiment. Two factors lead me to think against this is what happened. Each inch in a 55g is approximately three gallons. To have six gallons evaporate overnight won't be a one time thing. There would be evaporation representative of this at other times as well. Secondly, the humidity created from this much water in the air would not go unnoticed. Condensation elsewhere would also be evident.

Now I'm just not sure whether to vote for the ghost theory or the roommate/liquor theory

HOB filter may be leaking water through the impeller housing, which would run down the cord into the other tank. Doesn't explain why the cord was dry though.

I think the fish where spitting the water out of the main tank into the QT tank. In the all to famous who can spit the furthest contest.

my first guess but like I said the chord was dry. It is a whisper filter to and we all know how bad those things leak. Still confused why the bottom of the filter and chord were dry earlier though.
