OK, first off, i woke up this morning and went to turn on the light in my 10 gallon, when i looked in, i was surprised at what i saw. my six cardinal tetras had lost there red stripe. every single on of them. there were six cardinals with a blue stripe and no red. is this common? second, if they breed would the babies be safe with six small cherry shrimp, or should i get a nursery, thnx

Never had that happen but with neons it is an early sign of Neon Tetra Disease. Cardinal tetras are resistant to that though.

Indeed, i recon the water quality has stressed the fish, cardinals are delicate. What are your water stats? And there is very very little chance that your cardinals will breed, it is almost unheard of in hobbyist's tanks. Particular water stats and conditions are needed even for the possibility of breeding. But to answer you question no, the fry would not be safe with the barbs.

for the first question try looking into Neon Terta Disease, as for the second yea your tetra fry should be fine with cherry shrimp, i'd be more worried about your baby cherry shrimp being eaten by the cardinals.

ok thnx everyone, ya, i heard it cardnals like never breed, but i wasnt sure about if it was stress or something else, currently, i have a temp of about 75 and my pH, im not sure about, i think its around neutral though

Firstly i got to apologise, i thought i read cherry barbs, not cherry shrimp, my bad. Fry would be fine with shrimp.

Your temperature is fine, i would check your water stats though. You got a water test kit handy?

I don't get it. The author mentioned he just turned on the light and saw the cardinals with no red stripes. Of course, tetras can fade their colors whenever they go inactive. No other issues about them unless something is wrong with your water parameters.

Cardinals appear to be the only ones in the tetra group that are immune to NTD. Guppy has pointed this one right.;)

Piranahfreak, there is nothing wrong with your cardinals. They do go in a state of inactivity whenever lights are turned off. Try to post your water parameters.

As for the NTD issue, try to consider a few of these symptoms:
1. Restlessness at night...the 'afflicted' fish swims restlessly and away from the group(which are mostly inactive or still in movement).
2. Curved spine
3. White patch on the body..the colors of the fish appear to have been deleted. This is usually starts on the midsection of the body.
4. Erratic swimming...fish appears to swim as if it was getting stiff or paralyzed.

There is no cure to NTD other than isolating the fish for further observation and eventual euthanization if found to be indeed afflicted with NTD.

Take note that there is a false NTD which is columnaris but the true NTD has a more obvious cream color whereas columnaris appears to be silvery in color.

Just my two cents.:)

What about your ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?
