dark blotches?
could just be stress marks.
they tend to show alot when young.
get a pic.

im not sure whats going wrong here, especially since every other fish is fine.
he still tries to eat?
could be an individual problem.
like a birth defect.
im not too sure.

I agree that they are stress marks. They are present in all but one of the 4 other cichla. That's why I started doing the water changes, as in my experience, those stress indicators are a result of poor water quality.

He tries to eat occasionally. I've seen him eat a single bloodworm in a few days :(. There are guppies in the tank but he doesn't seem too aggressive it trying to get them.

I guess I left out a BIG factor :screwy:. He was previously in another tank with 3" cichla, I took him out because he was hiding behind the spray bar and wasn't eating. This was a week or so ago. Maybe the other cichla beat him up real bad...there aren't any signs of serious damage (only minor fin damage but it's gone now).

I'll try and take some pix when I get home.

thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it. Don't wanna see this lil guy go. I see some serious potential in him!

just keep up the water changes.
i wouldnt do big ones everyday though,JMO.
oh,and ive seen baby bass looking stressed for days at a time without any "obvious" reasons.

I would not use anymore salt for sure. If you think this is due to stress then Don't use SALT. If you are going to do major wc then do them every three - four days apart. I only have one thing to ask. How many Cichla are in this tank? And is there anything else besides them in this "little tanK".

Came home and the crazy guy has calmed down and is eating normally :) Not to the point where he has a round belly but much better than before.

They still have the blotches but seem a lot more stable than the did this morning so I'm happy to see that. I'll cut the water changes down to once a week and stop with the salt.

The 20g tank has four 1.5"-2" rosies and four 2" cichla.

Thanks again for all the help guys!

Why is that? I'll take some quick pix with my camera phone.

Because any little condition out there can be more accurately diagnosed with factual evidence. What if you're not noticing something that is there :nilly:...

Here's the guy in question (bottom right in both pix):
