2 Discus Not Eating & are Sluggish also

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Prazi is a good med, but will do nothing on Protozoa like Hex. You need Metro for that. Raising the temp will help when using metro, as will turning off the tank light, because light breaks down metro quicker. Treat the whole tank. You don't need a hospital tank at this point. The whole tank has been exposed for weeks by now.

thx, hills, waiting for my order. but can I ask where can I place the culled poor discus w/o just dumping him? I don't have another tank, have those rubbermaid kitchen trash bins, 1 gal clear plastic square container, etc. but no heater. yikes!

Put the temperature slowly up to 35 Celsius (that's 95 Fahrenheit in old money) and keep it there for a week than bring it slowly down by a degree Celsius a day. No need to throw antibiotics at them. Half the time the pathogens are already resistant to them. That's why a lot of people use di-metro these days.
Make up your own food, half and half beefheart and garlic. It stinks to high heaven but it works a treat.
If you have some almond tree leaves, add them as well. Most pathogens don't like an acidic pH

Kent makes an excellent garlic extract I add to all the frozen foods I feed as a preventative, 2 drops in my defrosting cup at each feeding does wonders.

ya in a q tank it sounds like internal parasites but i'm no expert on discus but i am on seals and sea lions

To cull a discus means to euthanize the fish. It may sound harsh, but the fish is better off by not letting it slowly starve to death. If you still want to try to save it, it will do little harm leaving it in the tank, since you are treating the whole tank. After all, it's been in there the whole time anyway, right?

IME treating for parasites either clears them or kills them, I love these fish but for some reason can't seem to keep them, good luck and keeping on trying.

so is 95F ok & no meds you say?

discus can tolerate that high for that long?
Not a problem just put an extra air stone in. Heat treatment becomes more and more popular with a lot of European discus breeders.

Any updates?

sorry, been in n out looking for job & errands.

so I was able to set up a QT by using a food service 1.5 gal clear plastic square container, partially submerged it into the tank to use same water & have same temp control.

the one I QT used prazi worked in that it let loose some big oval clumps of white watchmacallits! they weren't moving so poop maybe not the parasite itself? it became so sluggish like the life was sucked out of it - real bone fish looking now & sluggish & head up at surface. sad to say - I took the step to "cull" & relieve it out of its misery. it was difficult - my 1st discus loss.

now I have another (I think it's stunted) which I saw have white poop so I QT & prazi. but no evidence coming out. it's not eating also but not at bone fish stage. I also have a larger one not eating staying in the corners - it attempts to eat every so rare moment & even shows "attack" form towards food but then retreats. haven't QT it yet - treating whole tank.

also, one that wasn't eating for a week I had QT with the "culled" one & re-intro'd into the tank is now eating heartily.

so, in retrospect - I was foolish in not QT'g new fish so I think there lies all my troubles. my test readings have been fairly good.

I had treated with jungle parasite clear initially & when I tested water pH went from 6.6 to 7.6! is that normal or do you think it was something else I can't think of?

AM/NI/NA = 0 (NA was .125 b-4)

I have been doing my water changes - once a week 75%, daily 20%. feeding ken's flakes & frozen brine (most of them devour the flakes & some like the brine).

I'm thinking maybe once a week using live - no blackworms right, so bloodworms ok?

thks for all your feedback all!

update on the one QT discus. just checked to feed & saw poop that wasn't white, more tannish, went I scooped it out & wiped on paper towel, it was dark consistency. so is that a good sign & I can release back into the tank? & maybe take the other one not eating & QT-prazi?

thks again.
