2 foot Armatus eating 9 inch Mackerel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that pair could probably eat a dozen of adult convicts in one sitting. Do you know how much food, and time it would raise enough for feeding them on regular basis? You would need a small pond or lake and daily feeding to possibly raising enough to feed them.

The idea is nice
This is absolutely true, convict fry don't grow quickly at all. You could be sitting on your first batch for 6 months before they'd even be worth putting in that tank. And even then they'd probably be too small to bother with. I tried it myself, they pop out serious amounts of fry very often, but they grow so slow it's not worth the effort unless you have small predators.

And holy crap those fish look good. I'm in love with that aimara, the jaw on that thing is ridiculous.

Here are some pictures from today. I will try to post a new video of both of them eating tomorrow.

that aimara is absolutely amazing, did you guys mention at all what country it came from? Or who it came from? I think I need to keep one, my friend has one that is about 20" should I buy it?

I'd also like to know some history.....

Guessing a VZ from Erik?

I know that IF I could only keep one fish Aimara would be it.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Here are answers to some of the questions asked.

Aimara - I have had him for around 5 years. I got him from Wes "fugupuff". He was around 12" or less when I got him. Location was Amapa Brazil.
Armatus - I have had for around 4 years. I got him from a fellow MFK member. He was around 12" or less when I got him also.

Both of them I believe are over 2 feet I believe. I have held a tape measure to both while they were sitting next to the side of the tank and it showed 26" for both. I don't know how accurate this is but I figure they are both over 2 feet.

Diet for both is pretty much any frozen fish they can fit in there mouths from 99 Ranch Market. Mackerel, Scad, Trevally, Croker, Bass, etc. I feed them once or twice a week, the fish I feed are fairly large around 7 to 9". They have eaten fish measured at 12" before. I tried to get a video of them eating a 12" Bass but they are both not in the eating mood right now.

And despite what some people might think both show no aggression towards me when doing water changes. When I am cleaning the tank they will just move from one side to the other.

Looks like I couldn't have been more wrong.

Thank you so much for this thread. Been a long time since I've been this excited about toothy fish.

Could this mean there might be something to the myth of Amapas having a higher probability of being more docile then VZs? I know mine doesn't seem to fit the typical Aimara stereotype. Great to hear of another. Might just be coincidence, but it's something I've heard since doing research into them.
