what do you recommend for media if I used an ac110 and the one fx5? Media for Fx5 that is? I'm still new to cannisters? Thanks for all the helpful replies!
The FX5 has an excellent pre filter so usually the only media you need to use is bio media. Pond matrix or matrix bio media from seachem is excellent and very cost effective.

I have both of my FX5's loaded with Fluval Bio Max, It was pretty expensive to load both filters with it but worth the $$ in my eye's..

LOL sure we'll be right up. I'll tell Bob to wear his wet suit. He may not have seen it. I wasn't here when he did his magic trick and made the FX5 come back to life, so I didn't get to really look for the number. If it breaks again, we'll do another search for it.

I thought you said the FX5 worked again....

My FX5 died, and it's not the first time I've heard of them just not coming back on after you unplug them to clean them. I think it has something to do with the internal computer. It eventually came back to life. However, if we didn't have 2 other canisters (xp3 and xp4's) on that tank, we would have been in big trouble. Out of the filters we have (marineland canisters and rena canisters, plus the FX5) this is the only one that's ever died like that. I wouldn't trust just one. 2 sounds like a much better idea.

I did. We use it as an extra filter, just like we used to. What I said is that I would never trust one as my only filter. A filter that works half the time isn't of much use.

Even if you don't want to spend the money on another FX5 some other pump would be better just in case one crash on you. I have heard filters crashing and then they don't have another pump to put online so 2 filters are better then one.

:iagree:
+1

get 2

i have a FX5, 1200 GPH powerhead and an Eheim 2028 pro 2 on my 120 gal... its smart to have an extra filter, god forbid one fails..:grinno:

i would just use the large sponges, Eheim media or seachem matrix. (same for the AC110)

I run an Fx5 on my 240 long and it has worked fine. I hear carbon is a waste of time if you are not treating the water for chemicals.

I have 3 fx5 on my 200g and they have perfomed excellent. They are all filled with bio balls and 1 polishing pad in each one. I also have 3 marineland emporer 400 bio wheels that I use for the chemical.
