2 fx5's for 250-300gal ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 2 FX5's in my standard 100g. There is enough bio, but not enough mechanical. Umbee (2"-4.5") poop all over the substrate. They grew a lot this past month, so I added to Hydor IV sponge filters.

I agree with the folks, 2 FX5's on a 250-300g will not suffice. It's a good start though, but I'd add 2 AC110's and you should be good.

Sump AND the 2 FX5's.
Sumps are cheap and easy to make. The big expense is pumps. I bought 2 used Mag 18's for $100. Also I have 1 FX5 on my 240. Running around 3000 GPH filtered plus 2 powerheads moving water.

Is what I meant is 2fx5's to start and if the tank is drilled to add a sump later on when funds are sufficient for it....or if I'm lucky I'll grab a 250-300gal tank and sump used if possible... Prolly much cheaper to do that, and then use my fx5's in the tank regardless ... But honestly what should suffcient enough for a sump on a 250-300gal tank then ? And I'd likely just use all bio balls in the sump and keep my 2fx5 (fluval biomax/matrix and polishin pads)

Honestly 2 fx5's should be able to handle quite a bit, as long as you willing to gravel vac weekly as well as perform sufficient water changes.

I would however count the RTC out, don't think the filtration nor the tank will handle one.

As far as the p-bass, I couldn't really tell you because I've never kept one before but as long as you have enough bio, you should be ok.

Set it up with what you have and watch your levels, you may be surprised. If its not enough, you can always add more.

On a side note, I noticed you were thinking of getting a tank with a width between 24" and 36", IMO you should shoot for the 36" if you want a silver Arow.

+1 to the rtc... They get far to large really need a pond or a bigger tank

I very digilent with my WC's typically I change 70-80% out once a week and always vaccum the sand out each time, just way I've always been lol there is a tank I found new 72x36x27 1699 comes on sale for 1399 sometimes too corner overflows and drilled for sump and such

Fx5s are loaded with biomax and fine filter pad in the bottom and middle baskets, and top baskets have seachem pond matrix and fine filter pad as well so there fart loads of bio media in the fx5's lol (3.5litres of biomax and almost 4litres of seachem pond matrix)

My issue with canisters for big, messy fish is that you're using them for both mechanical and biological filtration....and opening and cleaning an FX5 or other canister is a PITA.

Matt

I don't mind having to open em up and clean them as all the media is in a mesh bag easy to clean only take 15mins to clean one filter if that... And I only clean one filter at a time never both the same time always alternating
