2 fx5's for 250-300gal ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
:ROFL:There you go Rob, get you a computer system, add Autocad and Pro-Engineer then you can design a MEGA system!!! And I'm going to get flamed but I still don't get the Big FX5 push. I know you have two FX5 so I would use them with all that sponge they can do Mechnical. FX5 is a kewl filter many nice features moves a ton of water but the basket setup is not all that. It's room for Bio is small for a filter it's size. I know I need to get off it but my 530 dosn't move that much less water and has much more Media room. I'm going to turn in my retirement fund and do a Real Sump System and Eheims:headbang2. My living room may not have a couch but the Tanks going to look awsome!!!!!. Everyone just trying to add some humor. Honestly planning a Aquarium is more work than shopping for a car, building a house, and changing your career all in one:nilly:.

And as for Oscars I swear mine will stuff there mouth with food swim over to my intake tubes and spit it all out just for the fun of it!!!!!!

Well I thought it be a good idea to be able to design/creat it in a 3d program to build it to spec so I know exactly how big I want each compartment and exactly how much media and such and were I want certain things, almost be like a instruction manual for when I actually build it ... But why is that funny ? Maybe I don't get your humour but I like to design and do stuff before actually doing and screwing it up as I'm not made of money lol

Oh Know.....Rob don't take me wrong..My humor is coming from your willingness to go the extra mile and realy do it right. I supported engineers from the IT side for years so even though I don't have a inch of talent for engineering I have a real soft spot for engineers or people with the talent to use that knowledge!!! Engineers drive me crazy because they have to figure everything out right down to the last screw but if you take the time they are amazing for there ability to create. And to tell the truth allot of the time I don't think these aquarium manufactures even know what Autocad and Pro Engineer are:).

I just think it more easier and less hassle to mess with a design or two on a computer program rather then make a system and be like crap I shoulda did this or that... Ya know make something and then post it on here and ask and see what everyone thinks of how it will work and etc and then it just a easy fix with a few clicks of the mouse rather then re siliconing a divider and this and that... I wanna do it once and do it right but also the KISS theory too, no different then when we've design'd motor's for the race cars and etc.... Then I've got a a step by step home made instruction manual to build it exactly like I want no second guess's :) now all I have to do is find a 3d autocad free dowload on line or a borrowed copy on line somewere haha

I had it on my old computer back east...but my laptop I have now could not even run it. I hope you got my earlier humor now?? I may still have some contacts I could email? Only problem with the trial version is it puts watermarks when you go to do the printouts but for your purposes that would probably be ok the printouts are still usable. I wish I could find the post from that guy who was talking about the sump system with the inline FX5's it sounded awsome! Also the admin on Oscarfish .com is one smart dude when it comes to filtration he has some articles that will make you think?? Don't know what he did for work but it would not surprise me if it was in marine biology or sometihing along those lines.

Ya if ya are able to find a copy of it that be cool ! And yea that also had me thinking of how guys have the fx5 plumb'd to there sumps in line and such...I think I wouldn't even bother printing I'd likely just save it on the computer then go look it up when its time to build/mod it :)

You know, I was thinking in this case you will almost need to know the exact aquarium your going to get to really finish the plans? I still have a few friends I stay in contact with that are engineers so I try emailing them. Autocad is a huge program, I take it you have a decent video card on your system? It's a hog on system recourses.

Sorry, did not mean to hog up your thread with computer stuff. It just blew my mind when I saw you was going to do a real design. You know maybe I will learn from you and follow in the spring? At this time people think I am crazy when I tell them what I have on just a 125 for filtration but I'll tell you what, the bioload is worse in a smaller tank because the load is the same and the space is less. When I started I was looking at the 180 to 200 range and I am kicking my butt in a major way now for not putting out the couple extra hundred dollars at the time.

I'll send a pm to ya with my computer specs to ya and see if it enough for the program, also I don't think I really need to know the exact tank size as if I design a build a sump that for a 300gal or so but end up getting say a 250 or something a bit smaller it will just be on the better side for filteration wouldn't ya think ? I don't plan on getting anything larger then 300ish gallons tho

so ive been thinking of using a stock tank for a sump basically same design/setup as MP including homemade filter socks as well lol :) ... 110gallon stock tank container filled with pot scrubies, and then my one or 2 fx5's for polishing water from the sump itself, sucking water out and pumping back into the sump, and im thinking about maybe a pump like this here

stock tank 110gallons http://www.tscstores.com/110-US-GALLON-POLY-STOCK-TANK-P14541.aspx
4200gph pump http://www.petsandponds.com/en/ponds-and-supplies/c5816/c209861/p16901387.html

all though between the pump, stock tank, is likely gonna cost me alittle over $500 after tax and etc for pump/stock tank/pot scrubbies from dollar store (as many packs as they have lol) does that seem expensive for what im looking to do or average ...? defintly doesnt sound cheap lmao

I think you will be fine if you keep up with water changes and general maintenance. Just add a sponge filter or two for the bio. The LFS near my house has a 800 gallon fiberglass tank with about 20 Cariba piranhas for over ten years with just 3 small pondmaster box filters with mag pumps. You don't need an expensive filter for bio, a sponge will take care of that. Now for nice mechanical filter, that can get expensive depending on how hardcore you want to get, but if you balance things out, don't over feed, weekly water changes and all that you won't have much of a mechanical filtration problem to begin with. In the end it is all up 2 you and your wallet. Good luck.
